Interesting machine.  

1.  Before I swapped drives I'd look to see what command signal the
current drives use.  At that age I'd bet on analog.  If that is the case
and they work, you don't have to screw with tuning new drives to the old
motors.

2. I'd look at the kind of position feedback and see if you'd need to
swap out or convert the signals from resolvers.   

3.  I've designed and built quite a few machines using rutex and a few
using Gecko servo and would not step back from a full closed-loop servo
system to an open-loop, step-and-direction one if possible.

Looks like a great candidate.
