Alex, thanks for the clarification. I've now installed the generic kernel and it correctly finds the ftdi device - this is what dmesg reports:
33.695614] /build/buildd/linux-2.6.24/drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial support registered for FTDI USB Serial Device [ 33.695657] ftdi_sio 3-1:1.0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected [ 33.695695] /build/buildd/linux-2.6.24/drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.c: Detected FT232RL [ 33.695865] usb 3-1: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB0 [ 33.695888] usbcore: registered new interface driver ftdi_sio [ 33.695892] /build/buildd/linux-2.6.24/drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.c: v1.4.3:U But the Arduino IDE still fails to communicate with the Diecimila board. Clearly I need to do some digging on the Arduino forum. But I'm confused. The sketch was compiled using arduino 0010. This is the same setup I'm struggling with, so Jeff, did you have to do some magic with the drivers to get it working on the real-time kernel?
