I reinstalled the Ubuntu 8.04 + EMC2 package. Now the latency test works fine. I'm getting numbers in the range of 7000 to 14000 nanoseconds, depending on what I'm doing with the computer.
I thought I had a work around for the network connection in using a USB wireless adapter. However, as it turns out, the adapter I happened to have also only works with 8.04.1. This is kind of frustrating. I've reinstalled the operating system 4 or 5 times this weekend. You may only get a few seconds to access the boot screen by hitting escape -- watch for the prompt. You can remove the -generic kernel altogether so that the -rtai kernel is the only option, or you can change the default option to -rtai. Some general information on doing this in ubuntu is here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=818177 However, if the problem in support for your LAN chipset is in the linux kernel driver (it sounds like it is) then you'll see the problem come back when you choose the -rtai kernel, because it has not been updated with the same bugfixes as the ubuntu kernel.
