A lot more got put into my question than I expected. I dont want to do any changing or stop running the program, The reason I wanted this feedhold feature is lets say you are running a tool for the first time and are coming down near the part you could hit feedhold and look at the distance to go and see if if there will be a crash Now the people who think it is not necessary are people with small/slow machines-- I have 500imp coming at the part and a lot of iron moving.
As far as how other machines work the new Fanuc controls can be set up to work like this: one hit of the feedhold stops motion and shuts off the coolant, two hits will stop the spindle but you are still in auto mode--then one hit of the cycle start will start the spindle the next hit of the cycle start will start movement and the coolant.
