The computer itself contains no power drivers, so you must use some sort of an 
external amplifier in order to drive the motor(s).

The simplest setup and the one I use is a 'xylotex' kit.  It does stepper 
motors very well, and with sufficient power to drive most any table top sized 
mill including the Seig X3 which at about 500 pounds, does stretch the 
definition of 'table' a bit.  Also steppers have been and will continue to be 
used on Bridgeport sized machines.

As for servo's, (which supposedly know where they are, something steppers have 
no knowledge of) that's a different ball game I have little experience with 
except in the video tape recorder field (I'm a retired broadcast engineer), 
so I'll let someone more familiar with their requirements elaborate on that 
subject.
