Another big problem is the sheer weight of the rotor. You would have a 
heck of a job getting any kind of acceleration out of it. If you want to 
start hacking stuff around, get some treadmill motors or similar dc 
motors and set them up as DC servos. You'll get a much better result. I 
use treadmill motors on my Bridgeport with great success.
