Ahh, soo, said the dummy.

[r...@coyote etc]# glxgears
3699 frames in 5.0 seconds = 739.411 FPS
3820 frames in 5.0 seconds = 763.634 FPS
3639 frames in 5.0 seconds = 725.452 FPS
Not exactly a speed demon. :)

And on goat via the x export to here:
g...@goat:~$ glxgears
6973 frames in 5.1 seconds = 1374.875 FPS
4877 frames in 5.1 seconds = 955.400 FPS
4876 frames in 5.0 seconds = 972.033 FPS
4616 frames in 5.1 seconds = 905.725 FPS
4421 frames in 5.0 seconds = 881.307 FPS
4226 frames in 5.1 seconds = 821.457 FPS

and while the display isn't corrupted, its just as spasticly updated.
And I have VERY serious doubts it could show that frame rate on its own 15"
crt.

The ssh encryption might be it I suppose. Since this is local, totally hidden
from the net, is there a command that I can use in place of ssh that does not
use this encryption? Reading the ssh manpage, it looks like I should add
a '-c blowfish ' to the command line, its much faster than the default 3des.
But that also made no detectable diff in the update speed.

The x server is running on goat, but nothing else that should adversely effect
it (that I know of, no mail agents or such are running on it.)

I just shrank it back to the normal screen, about 1/4 of this one, no change.
It sure looks good full screen on a 1680x1050 lcd though. :)

But not after running the logo? That is when I tried it and it was sitting at
the right end of that pattern. So I ran it back to within a few thou of
0,0,0 and it worked. I can see I need to fiddle with search speeds though,
way too fast yet.

I think I see. I'll have to play more when I get the switches installed.
Considering some opto-interrupters for those. Dirt seems to be a major cause
of a fudge factor even if using direct contact microswitches though.>
So many projects, so little time...

Thanks Jeff.
