all my EMC2 installs follow this path - creature of habit
1. ordinary Ubuntu - an EMC2 recommended dist
2. update Ubuntu with all updates
3. EMC2 - using the EMC2 script from the wiki
4. reboot
5. follow EMC2 wiki to prepare Ubuntu for EMC2 sources and compile
6. cvs checkout sources - I always use -trunk - I like the bleeding edge :)
7. compile using --run-in-place configuration - per the wiki
8. start EMC2 in a shell

after an update I have seen the default kernel changed from the -magma
to the updated kernel but not usually
changing the -magma kernel back to the top of the boot list is the fix for that
