I ran the emc provided latency test alone. Neither of the modules start when the other one is running as the rtai exits with an error.
basically I screwed myself with that NVidia card, then went onto the trail of the SMI problem as the holy NVidia card could not be the culprit (cynism!). And then when I got the card uninstalled I found out that the SMI patch causes problems. So..... I had the SMI patch AND the NVidia causing problems. Now I got the little box back to step zero and all is working so far. Was a great idea (NOT!!!) to put a more modern card into that old junker... But I learned a lot in the process about EMC and troubleshooting. That will come in handy. Thanks for all the comments. I'm a step further now.
