"the opposite direction" would mean that when you do a -Z move, the 
actual tool moves down (as it should), but the tool cone in the display 
moves up.  That would certainly be a problem.

But then you write:

This seems to say that when you do a -Z move ("when lowered") the tool 
cone moves down ("way below the work piece").  This is exactly what it 
is supposed to do, and exactly the opposite of what you said two 
sentences earlier.


When you do a +Z move, the actual tool and the tool cone should both 
move up.  If one of them is moving up from "top of work" to "2 inches 
above the work", and the other is moving from "2 inches below the work" 
to "top of work", both are still moving UP, and the direction is correct.

If the above paragraph accurately describes what you are seeing, then 
your problem is a Z offset, not direction.  The solution is probably to 
touch off the Z axis, or use tool length offsets, or both.

If the above paragraph does not accurately describe what you are seeing, 
you need to tell us exactly what you are seeing without contradicting 
yourself.
