One reason I like a forum setup (in addition to the list and IRC) is that it offeres a place to build a more coherent picture of a work in progress. In addition, it helps document successes in one location. From that documentation, one could more easily build a wiki for unique issues.
When a problem comes up, if one used the forum, that person could post a link in IRC or the list to the work in progress with all attendent files and attempted actions. Those more interested in the effort could carry on thier work without losing the thread of discussion among other list emails or the constantly scrolling IRC.
