In case it should come to that, I'll try to put together a simple
example using named pipes. I can see they're more suited to connecting
to an already running emc2, than is the coprocessor interface.

For doco, there's http://www.gnu.org/manual/gawk/gawk.pdf , which is
longer than the Addison - Wesley book, more current than my 1988 copy,
and free.
