Thanks for the replies...
Alex,
>>>Actually you probably only want 4 stepgens the last one
driven by A,B or C
based on a selection (maybe a M1xx script).>>>
4 stepgens would be fine but I can't find a way to persuade
EMC that the 4th one isn't 'A'. Perhaps I've not yet found
the correct documentation, but I can't see a way to choose
the designation of an axis at runtime... M1 seems to only
be 'optional stop'.
Stuart,
>>>>If you simply want to mount a rotary table on the bed
of a 3 axis mill,
align the centerline of rotation with one of the orthogonal
(X, Y or Z) axes
and then cut parts you need not worry about using A, B or
C.>>>>>>
That is what I want to do but I would also like the display
in AXIS to show me what it is cutting or how far it has to
go where multiple passes are involved. I am looking at a
program which wants the rotary axis to be aligned with the
'Z' axis - in line with the spindle and so produces its code
for axis 'C'. So long as the pinout remains the same whether
the rotary table is aligned with X, Y or Z, that isn't
bothered what it is called, but AXIS won't display the
correct path unless axis C is activated. I could simply edit
the g-code to change all the 'C's' to 'A's' and use my
normal 4-axis config but I wouldn't be able to see what is
being cut. Each time so far that I have tried to write new
ini, hal and pinout files they have failed to work whether I
have tried using just 4 axes ( complains it can't find axis
A ) or 6 or 9.
I've now spent 2 days trying every combination of parameters
I can think of and wading through documentation which I can
only barely understand and which seems to me to be a set of
cyclic references which eventually disappears up its own
paper clip... ;-{ To say I am frustrated is something of
an understatement...!
Another small point - when I have a config with more than 4
axes or a 4 axis script showing the 'C' axis, the keyboard
letter keys do not select the B or C axis for homing as do
the X, Y, Z and A keys. I suppose that this may also be
related to my not being able to get these configs working
somehow but I rather think that it may instead be an
omission from the AXIS setup.
