For slow I/O (user panel buttons and lights, coolant level sensor, 
spindle speed control  ...), modbus can work OK.  EMC2 does not support 
using serial buses of this sort for motor control.  It may be possible 
to implement this, but it's not easy to support all of the features we 
have (spindle-synchronized motion, smooth jogging, realtime feed rate 
override ...).  There are also no drivers for any interface hardware.

It would be a big project, should you choose to accept it :)
