If you are using one of the supported hardware interfaces, then there will already be a device driver for it as a part of EMC2. All you have to do is select the appropriate config files and customize for axis configuration, encoder counts per physical unit and such settings. > This will correct all the Lathe backlash, springing and pushing against > the cutter? > No, of course, it will NOT correct for "spring". That is physical deflection of the machine components. It will correct for any "spring" up to whatever component the encoder is measuring, but none of the spring after that part. Workpiece deflection, toolholder deflection, etc. are not going to be corrected for unless the encoder is right out on the tool. Backlash is another problem. The encoder can MEASURE it, but it CANNOT make it "go away". The problem is that while the motor is moving to one side of the backlash, the leadscrew is not controlling tool position, so the only thing that is in charge of the tool is friction and cutting forces. So, there really is no magic solution to backlash other than fixing the ballscrews and any other looseness or flexibility in the machine.
