Some boards allow to disable the ethernet in bios, kindly verify it is enabled
first.

I do not have this board, but several other asus boards. They always worked. I
just glanced at the asus page
http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=6nnVb6RBxd7PhGmt
it is stated it has Intel G31 Intel ICH7 chipset. nothing said about the
ethernet chip. So, I would suggest you do a lspci and probably paste the output
here. it will look something like this:
...
00:10.0 Bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP55 Ethernet (rev a2)
00:11.0 Bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP55 Ethernet (rev a2)
...
then you may google for the correct kernel module and load it manually like
ths : insmod forcedeth

I always have a knoppix live cd available. booting this, will give you most
liekly a working configuration for your hardware, look at lsmod output and
compare it to lspci. I had a similar problem once (not emc2) and was able to
convince the distro to load the correct kernel module based on the knoppix
lspci / insmod output. In that case I had to tweak the modprobe.conf to get it
permanently right.
