Usually I just follow the manual.

If you have a manual, find the setup section and follow it to the letter.

Sometimes a scope is needed to get the adjustments correct and if so 
they will usually supply test points so you can connect your scope/meter 
to the drive.

The newer digital drives can usually be setup with some software that is 
supplied with the drives.
