Good Afternoon group,
Man, what a interesting discussion.
One of the last comments I read was asking about the quality of Chineese
products available to the public sucks, then what about the quality of
products available to places like your local nuclear plant ?
And it got me to thinking. About the only way the "ramming of China down our
throats" is going to get a second look is when huge failures start taking
their tolls.
I have to agree, that we have only ourselves to blame for where we stand
right now. For years we have demanded less expensive products. Nobody cared
that the radio or toaster didn't last 20 years. We had to have the latest
and greatest to keep up with or even out do the Jones. And if you remember,
at first, foreign quality was actually better than US products. But, slowly
the quality started to fade off. No body really cared much because we had
become a "it's disposable" society. Remember that little "Fix-it shop" on
the Andy Griffith Show ? That use to be as important as the local barber
shop. After a while no one wanted to repair a 20 year old toaster, because a
new one was cheaper.
We have to change the way we think and we have to teach our children
differently. To some extent it is the same mind set I witnessed when it came
to watching my kids with video games ( which I absolutely despise with a
passion ) It starts out with "just got to have that game...it's the
greatest" which progresses to "I'm bored with trying it the hard way, where
do I find the cheat code that makes me invincible." which finally leads to
"I'm bored, but there is a better game that we just got to have..." Took me
about three times around that tree and I said enough. Unplugged it from the
TV.
There are a number of things to blame, but untimately WE are responsible for
how things really are. And the good news is WE can change it. It's going to
take dicipline and self control, but it can be done if that's what WE really
want.

That's all I got.....for now....

Martin
