For some reason I thought that Anders was talking about the SMP kernel
that Alex mentioned. There was a whole hour between the posts, plenty
of time for him to have built a new kernel and tried it :-)

Yes, the default kernel genuinely only uses one CPU. The SMP kernel
can appear to use only one CPU whilst actually using more.
