Re-reading this, I think I might need to clarify that in the first
suggestion the communication is via physical digital input pins,
whereas in the second the endstop status is reported back to the
G-code routine via the M66 "virtual" digital input lines, probably
pausing the code and waiting for edges using the L1/L2 words.
