Hello Thanks to the people who responded to my post.
The reason I asked the question is that the Reprap project at www.reprap.org, do exactly what I suggested. Unfortunately their project is making items from plastic in a 3D prototyping machine that you can build. Although I would have a go at programming it myself I am not clever enough to carry out such programming, which is why I was hoping someone else had done so.
