You don't need to use the EMC2 liveCD for this, and you're very likely 
better off not doing so.  The RTAI kernel often performs very badly when 
virtualized, whereas the normal Ubuntu kernel is fine.

You may want to try doing a stock install of Ubuntu 8.04, then download 
the install script here: 
<http://linuxcnc.org/hardy/emc2-install-sim.sh>.  You install the same 
way as using emc2-install, as described here (just use 
emc2-install-sim.sh instead of emc2-install.sh):

That should get you something that still works fine over a networked NML 
connection, but without the (potential) performance problems of a 
virtualized realtime kernel
