This is why I used 3 gear tooth sensors on the bull gear of a Bridgeport 
head.  A small hole drilled in the face of the gear was used for the 
index pulse.  I had VERY limited space inside the head for these 
sensors, but was able to fit them in.  Many lathes have better access to 
the bull gear, so it might be easier to do.

The sensors are about $6 each at Digi-Key, and are intended for use
