Best thing you can do is to load up EMC and look at the examples.  Read 
the integrators manual, and the hal manual.
Look at the Pyvcp example in the configs folder.

If you type emc at a commmand prompt you will be given a choice of 
sample configs to run..  Look at how those are wired in hal..    Look at 
the .hal files in the config folder.

Particularly the software stepper config examples..

You can also run the stepconfig program and then look at the resultant 
hal file that is created.

Also there are more details in the man pages for the hal components.

For instance..  say you want to look at the the man pages for the 
"mux2.9" hal component

At the command prompt in a terminal window type "man 9 mux2"  to see the 
manual.

Same holds true for the stepgen component..

It is hard to answer your question specifically since it is a pretty 
broad question.
