Well, the Dell keyboard worked. So then I did what I should have done in the first place: ask the Google!
Turns out, there's a magic incantation you can do to make the function keys of an Apple keyboard work correctly under Ubuntu: First you have to edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/options, add “options hid pb_fnmode=2″ Then run sudo update-initramfs -u Followed by a reboot.
