Hello, guys!
As i was not able to convince my PC to boot liveUSB or liveCD with
Ubuntu 8.04 + EMC and also "pure" Ubuntu 8.04, i decided, that i
should try my luck with Lucid and EMC combination.
I have downloaded installed all the packages from the link Jeff provided.
The situation was that EMC shows error message on startup.
The following lines:
NOTE: 'rtapi' kernel module must be loaded
RTAPI: ERROR: failed to map shmem
RTAPI: Locked memory limit is 64KiB, recommended at least 20480KiB.
This can cause the error 'failed to map shmem'.
For more information, see
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?LockedMemory
HAL: ERROR: could not open shared memory
halcmd: hal_init() failed: -22
have been repeated so many times, that even I understood that I should
follow the provided link. So I did and in the
/etc/security/limits.conf last line now looks as follows:
* - memlock 20480
With this spelling EMC starts without errors.
There already was something similar in the /etc/security/limits.conf,
unfortunately I do not remember correctly (I do remember that there
was no "-" and after 20480 was also #EMC). So I tried to "correct" it,
according to explanations, given in that file and it turned out the
correct spelling is the one I provided few lines higher (I tried
"hard" and "soft" instead of "-" and also I tried separating words
with "TAB", but nothing of that worked)
As I do not know, if this a bug or something else, I just would like
to kindly ask the author of the packages, if this can be checked.
The reader might have started to think of the purpose of this letter
and here is my question - should I register this information
somewhere?
