One thing you should know - which any good maker of violin bows will 
tell you - is that you should only use the hair from the tails of male 
horses. The female horses pee on theirs and that makes the hair 
brittle!!! The hair also has a 'right' and a 'wrong' direction. The 
scales of the hair grow so that they overlap in one direction so that, 
when the hair is pulled through the hand in one direction, it feels 
rough and in the other direction, smooth. This is important for violin 
bows and also for when I use horsehair as a polishing thread in 
jewellery making.
