On my system it helps a lot for the /usr/realtime/testsuite/kern/latency test to load rtai_smi.ko:
RTAI Testsuite - KERNEL latency (all data in nanoseconds) RTH| lat min| ovl min| lat avg| lat max| ovl max| overruns RTD| -1363| -1363| -1242| 2580| 2580| 0 RTD| -1361| -1363| -1260| 1083| 2580| 0 RTD| -1372| -1372| -1259| 2414| 2580| 0 RTD| -1359| -1372| -1263| 2396| 2580| 0 So I followed the directions here: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/emcinfo.pl?FixingSMIIssues and modified rtapi.conf so that rtai_smi gets loaded. I can run "/etc/init.d/realtime start" manually and get the "good" testsuite results. But if I run emc, or latency-test, it also runs /etc/init.d/realtime start, and then reports latencies that are more like the case when rtai_smi is NOT loaded, even though it really is loaded. Is there some other module or something the software is doing that could re-enable SMI or otherwise mess it up, or is there some kind of race condition, modules have to be loaded in the right order or something like that? I'm using a Toughbook CF-28, PIII 800 MHz. Here's dmesg, having just rebooted and immediately run latency-test, and then emc (but I also have to manually modprobe rtai_math so that motmod will be OK): Linux version 2.6.35.7-RTAI (r...@bucky) (gcc version 4.5.0 20100610 (prerelease) (GCC) ) #1 SMP Tue Oct 26 01:35:44 MST 2010 BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009f000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009f000 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000ce000 - 00000000000d0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000e0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000000f6f0000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000f6f0000 - 000000000f6ff000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 000000000f6ff000 - 000000000f700000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 000000000f700000 - 000000000f780000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000f780000 - 0000000010000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000ff800000 - 00000000ffc00000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fff00000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) Notice: NX (Execute Disable) protection missing in CPU or disabled in BIOS! This time, there were 871089 which is so anomalously large that it probably signifies a problem with your realtime configuration. For the rest of this run of EMC, this message will be suppressed.
