Ah, found the AVRISP. It's only $34. That's more like it. (Even the
STK500 is several hundred.) So now there's only the interface voltages
as a minor inconvenience.

Another thought: The AT90PWM3B has a 10 bit DAC. It's cheap, and 5v.
Incidentally, its triple PWM engines are hardware synchronisable for
generating 3 phase. I made up an Eagle component macro some time ago, if
you choose to go that way. The SO32 package has 1.27 mm pin spacing, so
is easy to solder.
