I would think that you could use HAL and pyvcp. It would work similar to
a DRO setup.

You could even link in a PID component to get better control. The screen
could have buttons for setting temperature. I'm don't know how to setup
a time vs. temp. script. Maybe use a separate C, python, bash or other
that can talk to HAL. Halsope could show a time/temp graph (maybe?).
