Not saying it is, but it would have me plugging in my dual trace 100mhz Hitachi 1065 scope to see what is going on better.
It may even be so simple as the parport's being a little puny at rise times and a pullup resistor, say 10k or so from each line up to a 5 volt supply might fix it right up. Do you have a scope and know how to use it?
