Using a piece of the electric plane blade, I machined a 1/4" thick piece of
hot roll with a dovetail profile that included a high center so as to flex
the carbide ever so slightly, but when trimming it to length with a diamond
wheel, I overshot it a couple of thou. So I cut a hacksaw slot in the
center that went all the way through the central mounting screw hole and
pinched it shut several thou with a hammer. Carefully driving the carbide
piece into the dovetail, I centered it up and slathered on 3 drops of
Loctite's superglue in the blue bottle. Installed to the upper guide, I
note that if its touching the running blade, there is an occasional
'sparklie' about 3/4" long coming from it, but can't determine if its
because its cutting into the back of the blade with an exposed end or what.
Visibility isn't that great due to the rest of the guide holder being in
the way. I did lay the ends back at a 2 or 3 degree angle with the diamond
wheel so it should wear smooth eventually. I think I am going to like it,
and will make a duplicate piece for the lower guide as the replacement ball
bearing I put there yesterday won't last long. The saw certainly runs
quieter.
