The drive bit isn't that big a problem and I expect I can source that at
Lowes. What I wound up doing for the first 3 was to drill 2" deep with a
bit about 7/16", then drill into the center of that for as far as I had
drill that would just clear the screw, then use a screw to punch the rest
of the way thru & mark it, use that to drill from the other side to
complete that hole. De-burr the holes so there wasn't any slivers to prop
the joint open, set a pair of screws in the holes, clamp it where it goes &
spin the screws in reverse to make a mark on the cabinet, then drill that
on for another inch or better with a 1/8" bit, deburr that too, run an 80
grit disk over the area to remove most of the finish so glue sticks better,
slather on some glue and use the screws to exert the clamping force.

But the initial 2" is a bit deep, I have too much screw projecting on the
inside, so the next assembly (I have 7 more to assemble yet) will use 1.5"
deep holes for the big bore hole on the ends, and only 1.25" deep on the
center one. The upper screw needs to be short enough not to interfere with
the spring loaded lid brace, and raised about 3/8" for the center one. And
a 3/8" thick piece of white ash added as a re-inforce on that ones inside
since the poplar doesn't hold a screw as well as the ash does.

This is what you could say is on the job training. ;-)

Cheers, gene
