The problem with doing this is the pulses of power drawn by the Gecko 
(or similar) PWM drive
stage produces quite large transients on the grounds.  These can easily 
reach 20 V or more
difference between the grounds on two Gecko drives with only a few 
inches of wire to the common
power supply.  Tying the encoder signals from multiple drives to a 
common logic input group
(either PC or encoder counter interface) will likely cause a lot of 
interference between drives,
and may not work at all.  That's why my Gecko Interface uses 
opto-isolators to connect the
encoders to individual Gecko drives.
