As always, my thanks to you and all your co-conspirators :-) I had no problem updating via Ubuntu's Update Manager nor in downloading the source tarball. As an aside, the error in version number also exists in a number of places in the source tarball, e.g., ./VERSION, src/config, and elsewhere. I'm supposing you have a script that takes care of these things.
