As it happens, I had just pulled a fresh copy of the V2.4_branch, so I 
built a v2.4.6 simulator and selected the puma560. Pulling the canvas in 
the 'tk' window around with the center-mouse button down seems to rotate 
the model about a point at the base of the column, which I assume, 
without reading the code, is the world origin (0,0,0). Not what I would 
call "a long way" outside the model. Perhaps the puma560 code has 
changed since you last played with it?
