That is essentially what I did, but I cut the sides away to facilitate access to the setscrews in my home made couplings whose design is similar but all hard steel. I assume the end of the tube we can't see has a reduced diameter web in the end with the usual 4 bolt pattern for the worm bearing bolts as mine has. Because the coupling is replacing the handwheel, its placement controls the end play of the worm too, so that has to be placed and tightened in position before the worm bearing bolts are installed. Due to the diameter of the couplings, its almost impossibly crowded to get them in, the allen wrench is turning one flat at a time. Smaller diameter couplings would have helped, but once they were cut from the shafting, I no longer had the ability to turn them, they are very hard steel and that 7x10 has tons too much rubber in the tool holder allowing chatter to waste $10 carbide inserts like a bag of M&M's. A normal HSS cutting tool won't touch that steel, it tip wipes away like it was body lead. I used a hacksaw blade, and used up 2 or 3 Starrett blades cutting each one off while the lathe was turning about 25 rpm. Its amazing what one can do when he doesn't know when to cut his losses & go find some 1065 steel for this sort of crap. :) Cheers, Gene -- "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
