I can't imagine the mess if I were to add ordinary home appliances.

And, of course, one could start imagining stuff like net-connected 
electric blankets
that a hacker in Timbuktu reprograms to roast you alive in the middle of 
the night.
No, I'll hold off on this crap for as long as I possibly can.  My wife 
has her
mom's 1980-vintage microwave with mechanical timer and shouts at anyone
who suggests it might be about time to replace it.

As for Microsoft, we have finally expunged the last major system here.  
Everybody
is on Linux now, and mostly happy with it.  We have an aged laptop 
running XP
to do our taxes on, and my photoplotter system with Win 95, that I will keep
until it dies, then I'll have to port that system over to Linux.
