What sort of work are you planning to do? In the Windoze world there is CamBam
(about $150 for the latest version, free for the old but still usable version)
I could not get it to  run under Wine. I just recently bought Vectric V-carve
Pro which runs well on Wine. It will do any 2.5 D work and is excellent for
artistic type stuff.  I am VERY pleased with it. Price is $599. They also have
Aspire which does full 3d but is out of my price range at $2000. It is a very
nice piece of software however.
