Ahhh.. old controls....  I know of a another lathe that does this.. 
intermittently stops during a run for no apparent reason.. sometimes simply 
hangs .. requiring a power off restart..

I think that the phase of the moon and the rising vs falling barometer may also 
be to blame. ;-)   Also deteriorating capacitors, marginal power supplies.

Like you say, grab good data when you can, as things will not get better.  :-)
