My advice is to buy microchip tools. They are very little more, and you get support. MplabX is finicky enough, I wouldn't try other tools at this point.
I don't know any website right off. I think you are best off buying a starter kit like the pickit3 debug express. The initial learning curve can be frustrating unless you have outside help, or prior experience.
