I used to demo my mini-mill with Gecko 201A drivers and some old, round NEMA
34 steppers.  I was running 90 IPM with the motors spinning at 1440 
RPM.  It was
quite awesome!

I think they use the fine thread because you can get  1/4-20 threaded 
rod cheaply.
But, it is pretty awful for a positioning leadscrew.  It does allow use 
of smaller
motors, though, for CNC.
