this has come up before on the forum

Most manufacturers supply drives with some kind of base system on them, which 
the user then changes to suit.

If you put in a disc with no partition info and no format ie completely virgin, 
the LiveCD cant see it, even though it is detected in bios and partman should 
be able to deal with it.
