There are a huge number of processes that start up at boot time (all those S## files in /etc/rc#.d directories) that can be removed. Get rid of DHCP, bluetooth, sendmail, ntpd, mysqld, and on and on. Some of these have delays waiting for a server to respond, which makes them even slower. If you remove something important then the system may no longer boot, you'll have to add the drive into a working system and put that process back.
