That, of course, explains why I was searching for zinc but not why the pharmacy was selling granulated zinc. I guess I should have asked my grandmother. She was the one cooking up our home nostrums when I was a kid. Did she need a reducing agent? Did she need to generate hydrogen? Too late to ask.
