Not sure how you were ever able to successfully run a FANUC controlled lathe 
WITHOUT running into U and W commands.

I use Fanuc 0T, 10T, 16T, 18T, 21T and U & W are used in all of them.

If nothing else the homing line command uses them

G0 G28 U0. W0.;

Its also used for radius calls, incremental taper definitions, tool offsets and 
more.
