Just to muddy the waters a bit but more :) - Fanuc OT controls at the place 
where I work use U and W for incremental moves that correspond to X and Z. You 
can mix incremental axis moves in with absolute moves in the same line of code. 
This is typically used for dealing with taper like so:
G0X1.0Z0
G1U-.001Z-1.300F.003 <-move slightly in X as you move towards the headstock.

Not to confuse things, but there are a lot of 'exceptions' out there.
