Not to discourage you from your own screen design.
Gscreen is very customizable already and is getting better.
You can have Gscreen display your own screen design if it is built 
with GLADE GTK editor. (I'm interested in other people's designs)
By using halui and some of motion component you can have button controls
already for certain features (that's with any linuxcnc screen)
By writing a bit of python code in Gscreen's handler file you can create HAL 
input pins
and connect them to buttons on Gscreen or if you want output you can use 
HAL_buttons
that automatically create HAL pins and track them.

Gscreen is only available in master though and is still evolving.
More then anything I didn't want you to reinvent the wheel if you didn't want 
to and
it also is an example of some of the things you can do.
