OK, so you actually work in power electronics and I am just a
dilletante but my understanding is that when the current flows while
the contact starts to open, the L dI/dt causes huge V, which tends to
arc and makes it hard to disconnect cleanly I understand that
contactors are designed to switch quickly and cleanly but 'especially
with inductive loads' is really hard to do it---that's why the HVDC
breaker I described recently is so complicated and was apparently only
made commercially last year.

Are you saying that while standard drum switches are bad news,
contactors are so beefy that it's OK to put them between motors and AC
drivers?
