I think the confusion is almost normal Pete. For instance, I am using some
cheap ebay sourced helical couplings on my lathe. Because the motor shafts
are small, 6.35mm, one of the things I had to do was to lubricate the clamp
screws because they were threatening to strip out by the time enough grip
was attained to stop a 425 oz motor, so in addition to that, I wound up
superglueing them. Windup of the helicals can be detected if the screws
are locked, but is not more than 3 or 4 degrees, and has always sprung
back. Dull or chipped edges in the chips in the tools may throw it off by a
thou, but they are usually detected, feed rates are slid to zero as is the
spindle over-ride, the QC holder removed and the chip replaced before the
cut is finished. For me on a small job 2 days back, windup was not a
problem as I had put 2 'spring passes' in my code without removing a
measurable amount of metal once the chip was fresh & sharp. I was
expecting the spring passes to be needed, but that seems to have been an
artifact of a previously poorly adjusted carriage.
